Description
The Swiss prosecution authorities and the Federal intelligence service (FIS) may order post and telecommunications surveillance measures for the purpose of investigating serious criminal offences based on the Swiss Criminal Procedure Code and the Federal Intelligence Service Act. The PTSS is obliged to produce statistics on surveillance measures based on Art. 16 para. 1 let. k of the Federal Act on Post and Telecommunications Surveillance (SPTA).
The police may request so-called complex informations (e.g. copies of identity documents, contract details). In 2024, 32'225 responses to such requests were provided (compared with 20'764 in the previous year), representing an increase of around 55%.
In 2024, 495'119 responses were provided for simple informations (telephone directory or IP address queries), compared with 419'192 in the previous year, representing an increase of approximately 18%.
