Information on the forest mix rate NFI is modelled using remote sensing methods. Based on swisstopo image strips and their spectral information, country-wide grid cells of 3 m x 3 m are grouped into deciduous and coniferous trees. Interpreted polygons on the mosaic of aerial images serve as reference data for the model. The 3 m x 3 m grid cell is generalised in a dataset of 25 m. Each grid cell has information about the proportion of deciduous trees. The dataset shows all stands throughout Switzerland, not just those in the NFI forest area. The spatially explicit forest mix rate NFI of the tree species may differ from the mix rate NFI of the terrestrial sample survey. The basal area ratio of deciduous and coniferous trees is used in determining the terrestrial mix rate. The ratio of visible treetops of deciduous mix rate trees to coniferous trees is calculated in the forest mix rate NFI base on the image strips.
