Description
The information system on antibiotics in veterinary medicine (ISABV) collects detailed data on antibiotic consumption in veterinary medicine. Veterinarians and veterinary practices in Switzerland are required to report all antibiotics administered or prescribed to domestic and farm animals. These reports contain information on the species, the number of animals treated, the name of the preparation, the active ingredients, the quantities dispensed, the dose, the frequency of treatment, the duration of treatment, the indication and the organ system affected. The distribution and consumption data are used to monitor antibiotic consumption and form a central basis for the Swiss National Strategy on Antibiotic Resistance (StAR). They make it possible to identify trends in the use of antibiotics, assess risks in a targeted manner and plan regulatory and preventive measures based on evidence. The data is also required for international reporting (e.g. to the WOAH) and helps to curb the development of resistance in animals and the associated risks to public health.
